Akwasi Frimpong, a Ghanaian-born athlete and Skeleton Bobsledder, recently made history by becoming the first Ghanaian athlete to medal in an international winter sport competition. In February, 2019, Frimpong earned a bronze medal in the Skeleton Bobsled World Cup in Calgary, Canada.
The achievement is especially impressive considering the fact that Frimpong only began competing in the sport in 2017. He began his Skeleton Bobsledding career after being inspired by his countryman and fellow Olympian, Eric “The Energizer” Shanteau, who competed in the sport at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
Frimpong’s success is even more remarkable given the fact that he was competing against some of the world’s top athletes in the sport. He was up against some of the most experienced and decorated athletes in the world, including the likes of Team Canada’s Dave Greszczyszyn, Great Britain’s Dom Parsons, and Latvia’s Martins Dukurs.
The Skeleton Bobsled World Cup is the highest level of international competition in the sport. It is the only event that awards medals, and Frimpong’s bronze medal was only the second time a Ghanaian athlete had ever competed in the event.
Frimpong’s medal-winning performance was even more impressive considering the fact that he was competing with limited resources. Frimpong is sponsored by two Ghana-based companies, but he does not have the same level of resources that some of the other competitors have access to.
Frimpong’s success is a testament to his determination, dedication and hard work. He is an inspiration to all aspiring athletes, showing them that it is possible to achieve success even with limited resources.
Frimpong’s victory is also a source of national pride for Ghana, showing the world that the nation’s athletes are capable of competing and succeeding at the highest level. It is a reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
Frimpong’s victory is a reminder to all of us that no matter where we come from, what our backgrounds are, or what resources we have access to, we can all succeed if we put in the hard work and dedication. His victory is a source of hope and inspiration to all of us.
